To harvest the gum, tappers cut up the tree's trunk using a sharp bolo and a wooden mallet; each one removing bark and releasing oleoresin.

At two weeks interval, the secreted sticky material is gathered, typically by scraping it off the tree with a blunt-tipped bolo or stick.

Elemi, which is destined for export, is manually cleaned to remove visible bark and other forest debris.

The carefully cleaned resin is then packed in polythene-lined wooden boxes---ready for export!
